The eyes of volcanologists (scientists who study volcanic activity) have been focused on southwest Iceland since 2023, due to frequent eruptions occurring around the small coastal town of Grindavik on the Reykjavik peninsula, which you can read more about in WIDEWORLD Vol. 36, No. 1, September 2024.

Although volcanologists are constantly learning about eruptions, they remain hard to predict. The science behind the evacuation of Grindavik has been decades in the making, and perhaps started with the 1985 eruption of Nevado Del Ruiz in Colombia, which took the lives of about 30,000 people in the small town of Armero.
