Patterns in global trade

What are the dominant trade flows between countries?

Global trade is the basis for economic growth if a country can export more in value than it imports. But dependency on the export of a narrow range of items or on imports from a limited number of countries can leave a nation open to trade exploitation. This website examines recent patterns in global trade.

Visit the Global Trade Explorer website (www.tinyurl.com/2sp4aafh). The default world map shows the main trading partner by country and how it has changed between 1995 and 2022. Click the ‘play’ arrow in the date box to restart the animation or use the slider below. The dominant colour of dark blue at the start shows that most nations traded with a bloc of 30 European countries, while by 2022 the increase in pink shading shows many countries had China as their main trading partner for goods, particularly in the Global South.

Click the down arrow in the ‘All goods’ box and select ‘Electronics’. Click the ‘play’ arrow and notice how Europe dominated the global trade in electronics in 1996 and how it had changed by 2022. Hovering over each country also identifies the main trading partner where data is available. Countries shaded grey in southern Africa have a main trading partner named that is not in the colour-coded key.
