Epping Forest ecosystem

Forests are complex ecosystems. We can gain a better understanding of their structure and interconnections with the help of these diagrams.

Epping Forest has a typical structure for a deciduous woodland (see Figure 1, above). The food web in Figure 2, below, shows the relationships between plants and animals which depend on each other.

Plants are the producers — they make their own food by photosynthesis from sunlight. Plants provide food for primary consumers (or herbivores). Secondary consumers (carnivores), such as mice or small birds, feed on primary consumers. Tertiary consumers are at the top of the food chain or web and eat the secondary consumers. See Figure 2.
