Global population growth

How many people can the Earth sustain?

Will the world’s population continue to grow or will it start to level off? And if it does when will this happen and will there be enough resources for everyone to have an adequate standard of living? This website provides an insight.

Visit the Population Matters website. Scroll down to see the global population clock. This is estimated by subtracting total deaths from total births. Total population is increasing because more people are being born than are dying.

Scroll down under the heading ‘The issue’ and click on ‘Population explorer’, then ‘I’m ready to explore’, then ‘I’m ready’. Slide the 1800 date bar beneath the map to the right and notice the growth in global population over time. Hovering over a country opens a box giving that country’s population in 2020. Sliding the date bar back to an earlier year will give each country’s population at that time. Click the arrow on the right and slide the date bar to the far right to show the population forecast up to the year 2100. Notice when global population is forecast to stabilise and at what size.
