This article looks at opportunities and challenges for the development of tourism in Black Rock Desert in the US state of Nevada (see Figure 1). An arts festival called Burning Man is held there each year, attracting visitors from all over the world. However, the festival suffered serious flooding in 2023, reminding us that economic development opportunities in hot deserts can bring some serious environmental challenges too.

Burning Man attracts people from all over the USA and beyond. Its line-up and audience include artists, performers, actors and musicians. Together, they create and participate in many different events over several days, including light shows, electronic music and much more. For many creative people, this week-long event is a ‘bucket list’ or ‘trip of a lifetime’ experience. It is usually held around the end of August.
