Look at the photograph and you will see the large brick building and chimneys of Battersea Power Station surrounded by modern buildings. These are actually two identical power stations, the first opened in 1935 and the second in 1955, and they generated electricity for London using coal. However, these old and polluting power stations were both closed by 1983 and the land was earmarked for redevelopment.
