The ‘reinvention’ of northeast England

GCSE geography, you will learn how the UK economy has changed in the past and how it continues to change in the twenty-first century. Northeast England has undergone substantial changes over the past 150 years. This region illustrates how the UK has moved from being a country reliant on primary and secondary industry to one that hosts world-renowned high-tech businesses.

In the past, northeast England was famous for its heavy industry and manufacturing, particularly shipbuilding. Now, however, most working-age people are employed in the tertiary and quaternary sectors. In December 2019, over 80% of adults worked in the service (tertiary) sector.
