Antarctica

Collecting evidence of changing global systems

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) operates a number of research stations in polar regions. The Antarctic and the Arctic are experiencing rapid climate change, which is affecting both oceans and the atmosphere, and influencing ecosystems. This BAS website shows how research is carried out and what is being discovered.

Visit the website www.bas.ac.uk and watch the introduction to BAS activity in Antarctica. Click ‘Polar operations’ from the upper menu bar and from the drop-down menu click the section heading ‘Life in the polar regions’. Scroll down to the bottom and watch the short video ‘Are you ready?’

Antarctica is unique. It is protected by an international treaty that has set to one side the claims of individual countries for rights to exploit it as they wish. This agreement aims to protect the continent from damaging activity, preserve it for scientific research and ensure it is retained for sustainable and peaceful use. Click on ‘About’ in the menu bar, and beneath the ‘Antarctica’ heading select ‘The Antarctic Treaty’, and then ‘The Antarctic Treaty explained’. Read the key elements of the treaty and watch the short video in the upper right — ‘Antarctica: Global Britain’.
