Handling exam questions about unfamiliar fieldwork

In your exam, you will face questions about fieldwork that others have done in a situation that is new to you. This is called unfamiliar fieldwork. This article takes you through worked examples of the sorts of exam questions you could meet.

What will unfamiliar fieldwork questions be like? First, you’ll be told about fieldwork done by a fictional group of students. For example, it might be a river study:

A group of students investigated changes along a river course. They used tape measures and rulers to measure width and depth, a wooden stick and stopwatch to measure velocity, and smart phones using an app which could measure steepness of gradient. They carried out their study during a wet spell in November.
