New life for Nissan

This case study of Nissan carmakers explains why this manufacturing industry is located in Washington, Tyne and Wear, and why it is now expanding. It shows how transnational corporations (TNCs) like Nissan create opportunities for the UK, and the role of this industry as the UK tries to reduce carbon emissions and tackle climate change.

In July 2021, Nissan announced that their factory near Washington in northeast England would be expanded and become a hub for the production of electric cars supplying the UK and European Union (EU). The Envision factory based at the Nissan site, which makes car batteries, will also expand. It aims to create an electric vehicle hub that will combine electric vehicle manufacture and battery production powered by renewable energy, with the aim of being a zero-emissions project. Nissan even hopes to be carbon neutral by 2040. The change to electric vehicles is the biggest revolution in vehicle technology since cars were invented.
