Soft-engineering schemes include water storage areas, such as the one at Clifton Ings, and land management in the upper catchment to try and slow the time it takes for floodwater to reach York (see Figure 1).
Hard-engineering schemes include building the Foss Barrier pumping station (see Figure 2), and also embankments and steel and concrete flood walls to protect properties close to rivers.
