What does ‘distribution’ mean in exam questions?

Knowing the meaning of words is essential for exam success. ‘Distribution’ is commonly used in geography GCSE exams — yet some of you might not know its meaning. This article will help you to understand how to write good answers to questions that ask you to describe a distribution.

Distribution is often misunderstood by candidates. The term 'distribution' is usually used in relation to interpreting a map, and it means ‘where something occurs.’ Once you understand the word, answering ‘distribution’ questions is not a difficult task. Examiners often ask candidates questions which involve describing the distribution of something on a regional or global map, such as rainfall, or different biomes such as tropical rainforest. ‘Describe the distribution’ questions usually carry 2 or 3 marks.
