Exploring perceptions of place

Challenging stereotypes

An essential element of GCSE geography is the use of case studies. Exam answers should not just include theory, but also be rooted in actual places. But do case studies lead us to construct stereotypical perceptions of places? These websites will help you consider this question.

A busy street in Kolkata, India

Visit the website  www.driveandlisten.herokuapp.com. As it opens, after a brief moment of ‘interference’ you will be presented with a dynamic street scene as a vehicle camera takes you on a drive along city streets.

If you scroll down the right-hand menu of cities, the one highlighted will indicate where this video has been filmed. You can increase the journey speed by selecting 1.5x or 2x faster. Street noise is in a default ‘Off’, but you can toggle this to ‘On’. Turn it off and then listen to the default local radio station located below by clicking the ‘Play’ button. You can alter the volume using the slider beneath. If there is no radio station available, or it is a language that you don’t recognise, click the ‘Forward’ or ‘Back’ buttons to take you to another radio station.
