Responding to data stimulus materials in the exam

Many exam questions use data as a stimulus material for a question, such as a table, a graph or data on which you have to perform calculations. This article will help to show you how to tackle these questions in the best way.

Data stimulus materials are used by examiners to introduce a topic that you have learned about. The data might be in the form of a graph or table of data and are designed to get you thinking. The data are used as a basis for constructing questions and they test three things:

■ your skills — because you’ll probably be asked to interpret them or do something with them (e.g. looking at the trends on a graph)
