How can cities adapt in order to tackle the problems of unsustainable living? Densely populated areas often have high energy use, which may be produced from nonrenewable sources. Urban areas also have increasing demand for transport with high traffic volumes causing air pollution estimated to cause around 7 million premature deaths each year. Urban populations also produce a lot of waste, some of which is recycled but much of which (around 52%) is still sent to landfill. Providing suitable recycling facilities in cities will make it easier to recycle and in turn will help reduce carbon emissions and fight the problem of plastic pollution.
