Understanding the command word ‘discuss’

‘Discuss’ is one of the more demanding command words used in GCSE questions. This ‘Improve Your Grade’ explains what you have to do to perform well in these questions.

In exam questions, ‘Discuss’ means ‘give an overview of a situation or a topic where there are different approaches or viewpoints.’ It means looking at the strengths and weaknesses of different sides of a question, issue or argument. Therefore, several points of view are needed to answer effectively. This command word is used in longer questions of 6 marks or more, and answers need depth and reasoning to do the job properly.

There are different situations in which ‘discuss’ might be used as a command word.
