case study

The changing UK high street

In your study of geography, you need to understand how and why economic and technological factors are leading to changes in UK towns and cities. This case study looks at strategies tackling changes in town centres.

We are all aware of the plight of our high streets — repetitive stretches of store chains, plate glass and plastic storefronts, often shuttered at night with metal grilles making many of them feel very hostile places. Then there is the scourge of empty shops. In 2018, over 5,000 shops closed — equivalent to 14 per day. There are fewer and fewer places where we can walk in and buy clothes, shoes, books, household goods and furniture in person.

On the other hand, there is an abundance of coffee shops, not to mention beauty salons, charity shops, restaurants, takeaway food shops and tattoo studios.
