Interpreting weather maps

Knowledge of the weather and how to interpret weather maps is part of GCSE courses. This article explains synoptic charts and provides tips on how to read them.

The maps used to record weather patterns are known as synoptic charts. They appear daily in newspapers and on television weather reports. They tell us about winds, temperatures, rainfall and air pressure.

These maps can be used to describe and explain the weather patterns shown. They can also be used to predict or forecast weather and the risks of natural hazards such as floods and gales.
