Blades on the Humber

Siemens wind turbines

This case study shows how transnational companies choose a location to take advantage of new technologies.

In 2017 Hull was the UK’s ‘City of Culture.’ As part of the celebrations a 75-metre wind turbine blade was carefully manoeuvred through the streets from the Siemens factory on the banks of the Humber estuary and displayed in the centre of the city. The turbine blade was the world’s largest, made of fibreglass and balsa, and cast as a single element. The firm now has plans to make a blade of over 80 metres.

Siemens is the world’s largest engineering company, with over 360,000 employees worldwide in more than 200 countries. As such it is a truly transnational company (TNC). In the UK the company employs 13,500 people in factories and offices involved in manufacturing and engineering. The household goods it manufactures are sold in shops throughout the UK.
