The 2018 summer heat wave

The UK’s weather is becoming more extreme — one example of this is the heatwave experienced during the summer of 2018. This article explains the causes and effects of this unusually hot weather. It provides a perfect example of a recent extreme weather event, which is a topic required by GCSE geography specifications.

The summer of 2018 was unusually hot, sunny and exceptionally dry, and the UK experienced heatwave conditions. Summer started early — 19 April was the hottest April day since 1949 with a temperature of 29.1ºC recorded in central London, well above the average maximum temperature for April of 11.9ºC. This made running the London Marathon that weekend particularly difficult, with temperatures reaching 24.1ºC, the hottest ever recorded for the race.
