Volcanic activity forms part of the GCSE requirements of the natural hazards section of most specifications. In May and June 2018, two different types of volcano erupted. They had very different outcomes and provide a useful case study.

Two of the most active volcanoes in the world erupted violently during May and June 2018. On 4 May, the first to erupt was Kilauea on Big Island, Hawaii. This volcano has erupted intermittently since 1983. It was followed on 3 June by the massive eruption of the Fuego volcano, just 48 km from Guatemala City, after months of rumbling activity.
