Understanding the command word ‘explain’

‘Explain’ is a common command word in GCSE exams. It is often used in questions of medium difficulty — that is, those carrying between 2 and 4 marks. This ‘Improve Your Grade’ looks at different types of questions which use this command word, and what each one expects in the answer. It will help you to understand what examiners are looking for

Examiners use ‘explain’ when they want candidates to give reasons for something in their answer. These are usually questions which test knowledge and understanding of places and processes. For example, in physical geography, examiners might want you to explain:
