The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from 1 June until 30 November each year and includes the north Atlantic, the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The hurricane season of 2017 was one of the most active ever recorded, with 23 named storms making landfall and four storms developing into major hurricanes. These four major hurricanes were named Harvey (category 4), Irma (category 5), José (category 4) and Maria (category 5) (see Figure 1 on the back page).
