The Trafford Centre, Manchester

L arge shopping and leisure centres are a prominent feature of our urban landscapes. The Trafford Centre was built on a brownfield site and opened in 1998. It is the second-largest shopping centre in the UK by retail size. It has over 250 shops, leisure facilities and other services. It is close to Trafford Park industrial estate and about 11 kilometres from Manchester city centre.

For a centre of this type and size, accessibility is everything. The Ordnance Survey extract shows the site in relation to motorways and other roads. It is connected to the M60 by two junctions (9 and 10), which allows easy access to urban areas in the vicinity. Ten per cent of the UK’s population live within a 45-minute drive, and the centre has space for 12,500 cars and 350 coaches.
