How to ‘evaluate’

Getting the best from command words

This article looks at how examiners expect you to respond to the command word ‘evaluate’

GCSEs have now increased the proportion of marks that require extended writing of up to 8 or sometimes even 12 marks. In line with this, more challenging command words are being used. WIDEWORLD VOL. 29, NO. 1 explored how to maximise marks in questions that use the command word ‘assess’. This column explores questions where the command word is ‘evaluate’. Like other command words, if you know its meaning and what is expected, you could score high marks.

The command word ‘evaluate’ is used when examiners want candidates to make a judgement about something. It means more than just ‘explain’ — instead it wants a judgement about the value or success of something, and a balanced overall conclusion. Therefore, in your answer, you should give a range of details and state which factors are important, rather than just explaining.
