Making the most of photographs

Examiners often use photographs in exams. Here are some tips on how you can use them to your advantage

Dhavari in Mumbai, India

In exams, photos can be used to introduce questions about your knowledge of a topic you have studied, such as a megacity like Mumbai. The photo will be there to make you think about the topic and recall what you know. Photos can also be used to check what you understand about a topic.

For instance, a photo of a squatter settlement or informal settlement might be followed by questions about who lives there, and why. The photo will be there for you to interpret and apply what you know. It can also give you a sense of place for a city you may never have studied, but in which your skills as a geographer will be used to interpret what you see.
