Derwenthorpe

Urban sustainable development

This article examines Derwenthorpe in York — a suburban housing development that is embracing the challenge of creating a sustainable urban community

Derwenthorpe is located 3 km east of York city centre (see Figure 1). The design and planning for this new community was carried out by the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust (JRHT). It is an urban extension built on a greenfield site, bordered on three sides by postwar residential areas. The name ‘Derwenthorpe’ is a reference to the Derwent Valley Light Railway, which used to run through the site. The development has won a number of awards for both design and build.

The rapidly growing population of York over recent years has heightened the demand for new housing. The supply of brownfield sites is limited and York City Council’s planning has included an allocation of greenfield sites for new residential areas. The JRHT is an independent organisation working to inspire social change through research, policy and practice. The trust was keen to draw upon the legacy created at the start of the twentieth century by the chocolate maker and philanthropist Joseph Rowntree, who created a ‘garden village’ at New Earswick in the north of York.
