Data sampling

As a GCSE geographer you will complete fieldwork with your school, which will involve collecting data. This Geographical Skills aims to help you plan your fieldwork and prepare yourself for skills-based questions in your exam

Table 1 Examples of the three main sampling strategies

When collecting data you must decide which data you should collect, why you should collect this type of data and how much you should collect. To answer these questions you have to understand data sampling.

The aim of some of your fieldwork will be to investigate a geographical question and test if your hypothesis (what you predict will be the answer to your geographical question) is correct. To do this you will need to collect primary data (data you have collected yourself).
