What’s the world’s weather doing today?

GIS (Geographical Information Systems) have revolutionised our access to data in recent years. The app discussed in this Wideworldweb provides real-time information on key features of the weather, allowing you to find out what the weather is like today — anywhere in the world

Download the free app MeteoEarth (www.meteoearth.com) and, once installed, open it. Pinch in the screen to view the whole globe. Toggle the <3D> button in the lower right corner. You can choose to view the Earth as a flat projection or globe. The button toggles between dark and light — as all of them do — to indicate whether they are ‘off’ or ’on’. Stay in 3D view for best effect. In the bottom left corner there is another button that toggles between <Forecast View> and <Climate View>.

To begin, select ‘Climate View’. You will notice that a few cities are named and located on the globe. Tap one, such as Berlin, and a climate graph is revealed. You can scroll the globe to find the other named climate stations or, alternatively, tap the city name in the upper left of the screen. A drop-down list of the other cities appears showing their current time, temperature and general weather conditions. If you tap on a city from this list you are taken to its location on the globe and you can tap again to select its climate graph.
