What are the opportunities and challenges of hosting an Olympic Games? This article provides an excellent case study for the topics of development and sustainability

An artist’s impression of how the Rio Olympic Park will look in August 2016

Following on from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Rio de Janeiro in Brazil is preparing to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This will be the first time the Olympics has been held in South America. The games will take place between 5 and 21 August 2016.

Rio is located on the southeast coast of Brazil (see Figure 1) and is popularly known for its sandy beaches, carnivals, football, shopping and spectacular views. It was once Brazil’s capital, and is now its second largest city, with a population of about 6.5 million. The games will take place in 32 venues across four regions of Rio — Copacabana, Deodoro, Barra and Maracanã (see Figure 2).
