The city of Kingston upon Hull (Figure 1) will hold the status of UK City of Culture in 2017, having made a compelling bid for this title based on its theme as ‘a city coming out of the shadows’. The British government chooses a new destination for the City of Culture every 4 years, with the aim of encouraging tourism and boosting the economy. The inspiration for this scheme was the success of Liverpool’s year in 2008 as European Capital of Culture, which brought significant social and economic benefits to the area.
Part of the process of preparing for this event in 2017 is the opportunity for Hull to attract inward investment to the region. This is being used to redevelop derelict sites in the inner-city area. One such location is the historic Fruit Market, a brownfield site on the banks of the River Humber (Figure 2).
