Comparing global locations for geographical patterns

Ever wondered how far you are from the nearest volcano or earthquake zone? How different is farming on the other side of the world from you but at the same latitude? This Wideworldweb investigates a fascinating app which lets you find out about geographical characteristics

Download the free app Field Notes-Earth by Esri (available from Apple or Google Play). On screen 1 scroll over the map of the Earth and select a location you would like to find out about, either by typing its name into the <Search> bar, locating a drop pin by tapping the chosen place on your screen or selecting ‘own location’. You can pinch out the map to enlarge it and make the search more precise.

Once selected, move on to screen 2 and check or uncheck as many of the three categories of ‘Select Profiles’ that you are interested in. The options at the bottom of the screen allow you to switch between measurement units (metric or standard). Slide on to screen 3 and you will notice geographical enquiry questions in colour with the answers for your location in white. If you selected more than one profile category you can switch between them using the tabs at the top.
