Milford Haven

How did the natural harbour of Milford Haven come to be formed, and what is its economic significance?

Milford Haven is a magnificent natural harbour in Pembrokeshire, west Wales. Lord Nelson regarded it as the second best harbour in the world after Trincomalee in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka).

The Haven is a drowned river valley — aria. Around 50 million years ago rocks and sediment that had been beneath the sea were uplifted to form land. A river valley developed on the newly created land, following the line of a fault.
