In January and February of 2014, the UK was battered by storms and torrential rain. This occurred when the jet stream bringing depressions across the Atlantic Ocean shifted south. The Met Office recorded that 146.9 mm of rain fell in January: a new record. The impact was drastic as thousands of homes and businesses were flooded. Could we have prepared better for these floods to reduce their impact? I will be looking at methods used to prepare for floods, and their advantages and disadvantages, with a focus on the River Thames.
