Freiston Shore reserve

Protecting a coastal habitat

This article provides a good case study of managed retreat on the Lincolnshire coast, and plant succession in a coastal ecosystem

The RSPB reserve at Freiston Shore is a successful example of managed retreat of the coastline which has led to the restoration of a healthy salt marsh. The reserve is 6 km east of Boston in the area known as The Wash on the Lincolnshire coast (Figures 1 and 2).

In the nineteenth century this area of coast was a sandy beach used for sea bathing. Over time its sheltered position in The Wash led to the accumulation of mud, and a salt marsh developed. As the sandy beach was replaced by mud and the sea retreated, the hotels closed.
