Las Vegas is situated in the middle of a desert. If you were to visit you would be amazed at the amount of water being used. There are enormous fountains everywhere and one part of the city is modelled on Venice, including the canals. There are thousands of swimming pools and numerous golf courses which require sprinklers to keep them green.
In the last 20 years the city’s population has grown from 400,000 to over 2 million and it is still growing. In one community occupied by celebrities there is a lake the size of 160 football pitches, filled with 14 trillion litres of water. Each year this lake needs 14 billion litres of fresh water to ensure that it does not become stagnant. It is not surprising that each person in Las Vegas has a water footprint of over 1,000 litres per day. And all this in the middle of a desert!
