The government has stated that applications for shale gas extraction licences should be refused in National Parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, World Heritage sites and the Norfolk Broads, other than in ‘exceptional circumstances and in the public interest’.
A government report suggests that fracking would deliver at least 25% of the UK’s annual gas needs in the 2020s, and a possible 32,000 new jobs.
