Coastal management

An interesting and popular fieldwork project is to identify different types of coastal protection along a stretch of coastline, and to evaluate the impact and success of different schemes

People have gravitated towards the coast for many centuries, attracted by economic benefits and recreational activities. However, those living or working in coastal areas are potentially at risk from the effects of erosion, storm surges and flooding. In response to this, a variety of coastal management schemes have been introduced in order to try to protect the coast.

Coastal areas are potentially dangerous environments, so great care is needed when undertaking fieldwork by the sea. You should bear the following in mind:
