Urban quality-of-life surveys

Comparing the quality of life between different parts of a town or city can make an effective fieldwork project. The precise definition of which variables are covered by ‘quality of life’ is open to interpretation. This gives you the opportunity to define what your understanding is and what features you will investigate.

Urban areas are typically characterised by a range of residential environments. You may choose to compare selected examples of particular residential areas (e.g. an old inner-city area, redeveloped inner city, inner suburbs, outer suburbs, greenfield housing estates). Or you may choose to sample roads along a predetermined transect (see WIDEWORLD, Volume 25, Issue 1, pp. 4–5).
