Mapping diversity in the UK

Data about everyone who lives in the UK are collected in many ways. One example is the national census, which has been carried out every 10 years for over 150 years (the only break being during the Second World War). Such data can reveal patterns and be used to create maps showing the distribution of various characteristics of the population across the UK, including ethnic groups, academic qualifications, crime and deprivation.

Log on to the website  www.ukdataexplorer.com and select the map option ‘Deprivation in London’. These data come from the Department for Communities and Local Government. Zoom in or out to get a clear view of the whole city and, using the key showing levels of deprivation on the right, look for patterns in the distribution of most and least deprivation. Changing the ‘opacity’ row will intensify the colour coding, or reduce it so that you can see the major roads and named areas.
