River studies

A popular fieldwork study is to investigate changes as a river flows downstream. This article focuses on a range of different variables that can be investigated, through measuring and comparing selected sampling points along the course of a river

Measuring the width and depth of a river

When carrying out fieldwork on rivers, you must be aware of potential risks associated with deep running water and take health and safety precautions. You should remember that keeping safe is always more important than data collection.

Having selected a river to study, it is then necessary to identify between six and eight sampling sites from which to collect data. As well as choosing sites at different stages in the river’s profile, access and safety considerations may also influence site selection.
