During the summer of 2013 I went to Zambia to join a reforestation and eco-education project in Livingstone, a town close to the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe and near the Victoria Falls (see Figure 1). This project is run by a South African social enterprise called Greenpop, which began its work 3 years ago and has already planted over 40,000 trees — well on the way to its target of planting 50,000 trees by 2020.
Misha, one of the founders, had the idea for Greenpop after accumulating 400,000 air miles while working for an advertising company. Instead of just paying to offset his air miles, he decided to do something tangible and Greenpop evolved from this. Greenpop’s Trees for Zambia project aims to reduce the rampant deforestation in the region and educate local charcoal sellers and communities about the alternatives to charcoal.
