Winter 2013–14 was the wettest in the UK for over 100 years and rain hit southern England and Wales particularly hard. The storms were brought by a sequence of low-pressure systems coming across the Atlantic, carried by an unusually strong jet stream.
The persistent heavy rain, which lasted from December until February, caused flooding in many areas, but the Somerset Levels were particularly badly hit. This photograph shows the village of Burrow Bridge surrounded by flooded farmland. Residents were forced to leave their homes and farmers had the difficult job of finding alternative land for their stock.
