Management of coastal flooding in Deal

Most GCSE courses require you to study the management of a section of coastline. The recent works in Deal provide an excellent case study, as they are small in scale and include both hard and soft engineering strategies

Before the recent engineering works to its coastline, the town of Deal in Kent was at risk of extensive flooding. Some areas had a 1 in 20 chance of coastal flooding every year. To protect the town, major works took place in 2012, including the construction of a new sea wall, the addition of rock armour and extensive beach replenishment. This has reduced the risk of annual flooding to 1 in 300.

Deal is an attractive coastal town located near Dover (Figure 1). The town has good accessibility by car, train, air and ferry:
