Mining in a National Park

Controversy in the North York Moors

Economic activities such as mining in areas of natural beauty can be a cause for concern. They need careful management in order to preserve the environment

The unspoilt scenery of the North York Moors

A mine 1,500 metres deep is likely to be dug beneath unspoilt moorland of the North York Moors as part of plans to exploit the largest deposits of potash in the world (Box 1). Potash is used to make fertiliser.

Potash is used to make potassium, which we use in big quantities. Crops fed on potassium-based fertiliser need less water, grow longer, resist drought better and stay fresh longer once harvested. With the global population expected to increase over the next decade, the fertilising properties of potash are needed urgently. Canada, Belarus and Russia currently produce most of the world’s supply.
