Is Dorking a clone town?

Aclone town is defined as a ‘town where the high street or other major shopping areas are dominated by chain stores’. These chain stores offer strong competition to local shops in the area and often lead to the closure of local businesses.

The loss of local shops and businesses has taken away the unique character and flavour previously found in many towns and led to almost identical high streets across the country, filled with the same national and global names. Over 40% of UK towns are now seen as ‘clones’. Intrigued by this idea of cloning we set out to discover whether or not Dorking in Surrey has become a clone.
