T his year, geography GCSE examinations will become more difficult: A* and A grades will only be awarded to students who do well in a range of skills. One way of making exams more demanding is to increase marks for longer questions — the section examiners call ‘extended writing’.
Instead of 6-mark answers, some exams will now contain questions of 8, 9 or even 12 marks. There will be more questions like this, meaning that extended writing will make up a greater percentage of the exam. You will have to plan carefully what you want to say, and you will need to know your stuff!
