Bradfield

Changes in a village

How have farming and village life changed in the first years of the twenty-first century? This article looks at the changes in a Peak District village

Bradfield sports field and Village Hall has become the focal point for the community

The village of Bradfield is located in the Peak District National Park, northwest of Sheffield (Figure 1). Its earliest settlement dates back to the twelfth century and the community initially developed due to the growth of hill sheep farming in the area.

As hill sheep farming has become less profitable over many years the number of people employed in farming has significantly declined. This has resulted in rural depopulation, as many young people have sought better jobs and greater education opportunities in neighbouring cities such as Sheffield and Leeds (this is known as out-migration).
