Why was it so wet in 2012?

This article looks at the reasons for, and the effects of, the washout summer of 2012, and questions whether it may indicate changing weather patterns

According to the Met Office, the total rainfall for the UK during 2012 was 1331 mm (or 1.3 metres), making it the second wettest since records began in 1910. Many parts of the UK were affected by extreme weather. The Environment Agency states that 8,000 properties were flooded, with a further 200,000 spared from flooding in at-risk locations by flood defences.

Farming and the rural economy were also hit by the wet weather, with flooded fields resulting in reduced yields, failed harvests and lost livestock: this added up to an estimated £108 million in insurance claims.
