A fisherman using a net from his boat lands a catfish on Lake Victoria
Lake Victoria supports the most productive freshwater fishing industry in Africa. Over 51,000 boats, 153,000 fishermen and 35 processing factories support some 2 million people around the lake’s shores.
Before the 1950s there were around 500 species of fish in Lake Victoria. The main types caught by the fishermen were the small, bony cichlids and the larger tilapia.
